Greener Homes Grant for families in Canada

What Is The Greener Homes Grant?

The Greener Homes Grant is an amazing rebate system through the Government of Canada in partnership with Enbridge Gas. If your home is older than 6 months old, you may qualify for a retrofit rebate or loan.

“The Canada Greener Homes Grant is being co-delivered by Natural Resources Canada and Enbridge Gas in Ontario under the Home Efficiency Rebate Plus (HER+) program. Grants are provided to eligible homeowners for recommended and eligible retrofits such as home insulation, windows and doors, heat pumps and renewable energy systems.”

Note: The Home Efficiency Rebate Plus offers up to $10,000 for certain home improvements.

The Greener Homes Grant allows Canadian homeowners to upgrade their existing energy systems in their home with new ones that are more environmentally friendly. This includes renovations such as adding new installation, installing a heat pump, replacing older windows and doors, and investing in other renewable home energy systems.

How To Apply For The Greener Homes Grant

The Greener Homes Grant is in place for all of Canada, but some provinces have their own set of regulations and a separate application process. Click one of the links below to take you to your province’s Greener Homes Grant page:

Before you apply, you need to make sure that you are eligible for the grant. Many homeowners are eligible, including both Enbridge Gas customers and those who are not with Enbridge, off-the-grid communities with at least 10 dwellings and some low-rise multi-level dwellings.

There are stipulations. You can check out all of the eligibility requirements from Enbridge Gas here. You can also check out the Greener Homes Grant FAQ here.

Ready To Get Started?

If you qualify and would like to get started, the first thing you’ll need to do is head over to the Enbridge Gas website. You will need to then have a pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation completed. A certified Energy Advisor will come to your home. The will first confirm that you are in fact eligible for the grant, and then they will conduct some tests.

After that, you will be provided with lots of information about the energy-efficiency of your home. You will get a Renovation Upgrade Report that shows you which retrofits will most improve your home’s energy efficiency so that you can invest in the ones that are best for you and your family.

The Greener Homes Grant helps homeowners across Canada upgrade their homes

The entire process is designed to run smoothly. Natural Resources Canada wants homeowners to upgrade their homes as energy efficient homes means a cleaner, healthier Canada.

Before diving in, it’s important to remember that this is a rebate program – this means that you have to pay for the evaluations, renovations, labour, and any other associated costs upfront and then once the renovations are completed and have been approved during your post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation, you will receive your grant.

If you need assistance paying for renovations, there is also a loan available of up to $40,000 to help ensure that this program is accessible to many Canadians across the country. Learn more about the Canada Greener Homes Loan here.

What Is a Heat Pump?

When looking into the Greener Homes Grant, you may have come across the term “heat pump.” While heat pumps are not necessarily new, they are a new idea to many homeowners across Canada. With the installation of a heat pump, you can receive a grant of up to $6,500!

So, what exactly is a heat pump? A heat pump is actually an alternative to the traditional air conditioning system most homes currently have installed. A heat pump runs on electricity and it extracts heat from a low-temperature place (a source), and delivers it to a higher-temperature area (a sink).⁣⁣⁣

Unlike your AC or furnace, a heat pump can reverse! What does this mean? Well, it means that a heat pump can both heat and cool your home. This is an excellent way of  providing year-round comfort to you and your whole family.⁣⁣⁣

That’s interesting, but how does it work exactly? We mentioned that a heat pump draws from a low-temperature source. As the heat pump draws from the source, the temperature gets further reduced. If your home is the source, thermal energy will be removed, which in turn cools down the space. ⁣⁣⁣

This is how a heat pump operates in cooling mode – it is the same principle used by air conditioners and refrigerators. To heat your home, a similar process is used. As energy is added to a sink, its temperature increases. If the home is used as a sink, thermal energy will be added, heating the space.⁣⁣⁣
